I loved The Witch when I first saw it. It was legitimately such a uniquely entertaining horror film where so much went on on the screen and you could feel expert film-making in the subject matter and the attention to detail. For this reason I was very excited to see the next effort from Robert Eggers and it looked like an absolute mad one from the trailer. After watching, the film certainly is madness although I can't help but feel that my expectations were way higher than what I felt after watching the film.
The film is about two lighthouse keepers on duty in isolation. The two are initially at odds with each other with a boss-employee relationship with a lot of hostility. Soon both men realize the effects of their loneliness in the isolation and descend into madness and terror with each passing day. Reality becomes blurred and emotions and violence flares. There are very few actors in this film and it is primarily comprised of Willem Defoe and Robert Pattinson.
The film is shot entirely in black and white and the aspect ratio is 1.19:1. The film looks and feels like something from the past. The film could have easily been made in the 50s or 60s, it absolutely looks the part. The sound effects and editing on the phone are stellar. Every crashing wave, siren, and moment of terror is heard precisely. The acting is also tremendous from both men. I have no worries at all about Robert Pattinson playing Batman. Between Good Time and now The Lighthouse, I already know that he is a very talented man.
This film once against offers unforgettable and unnerving imagery much like The Witch. Its a craft in technical film making although I felt like the film dragged in its narrative. A lot felt like rambling (though very well presented) and I feel like other segments feel incoherent and garbled. Its a good film no doubt but after The Witch I was expecting to absolutely love this film. Still its a good effort from a film maker with a wealth of talent.

A place Leia had no connection to aside from being a slave to Jabba. Forget about somewhere respectable like say Padmes grave on Naboo.

You know, one of the major flaws from the gate about this trilogy for me was that in The Force Awakens. Rey really wasn't the main character. I mean yes, they said she was. But where does the movie start? With Poe and Finn. What's the first emotional scene? Finn being traumatized by battle. What's the first real conflict of the movie? Finn deciding he needs to escape the First Order, betraying everything he knew. What's the recurring plot arc through the movie? If Finn is going to be brave or not. He's a traumatized figure struggling to see if he'll do what is right, but dangerous, or if he'll run and hide again. Rey really doesn't do anything Main character-y until she picks up a light saber at the end of the movie, and Finn is taken out. Considering what we know about the production, I don't think that was intentional. I mean there is a story structure where you fake out a main character like that. You build it up so X is the hero. and then kill them off and go forward showing how a 'lesser' replacement struggles to fill boots that they never were intended to wear. Except the marketing and hype all said that wasn't the case. They built it up as Rey being the main character, period. It's why I think so much of the trilogy ends up coming off poorly. Abrams has many flaws. Not understanding how space works is one of them of course. But deeper than that. I start to wonder if he ever really studied writing and the craft of storytelling, like at all. He just doesn't seem to have a natural grasp of it. This isn't bad in and of itself. Plenty of Directors seem to lack that, but focus instead on other bits like cinematography, etc. Except he seems to think he's not great, but competent as a storyteller. And. just the inability to recognize who the main character is in their own story kind of tells me he isn't. Of course I get WHY he'd think Rey is the main character. Because Rey was the Luke Expy. Poor on a backwater desert world, wearing white, had some vague connection to the Jedi not defined at that time. It has all the superficial elements to her being Luke. but it's missing the conflict. Whiny as the lines sounded, the very real world I want to get off this farm and No Son, I need you around for another season kind of bit. The grumbling about how he hates where he is while he's cleaning the droids. The lusting after Princess Leia hologram and how that spurs him onto action. The run in with Obi-Wan and the awe of hearing about the Jedi. The homestead getting torched and showing he had nothing to go back to. Training with Ben. Princess Leia Rescue. Shooting down TIE fighters. The assault on the Death Star. Every step of the way it's about Luke, what Luke is up to, how Luke feels about things, and how things impact Luke. Rey. doesn't have that. Until quite literally the last 10 minutes when she picks up a light saber and goes at Kylo Ren. It's that sort of thing that plagues the start and end of the trilogy. Abrams is good at superficially calling out to the original trilogy. but he completely missed the context and narrative weight. It leaves it hollow at best, and terribly confused at worst.
